Food security is a state of having consistent, reliable access to enough food to meet a person’s nutritional needs and food preferences at all times. It includes four pillars: availability, accessibility, affordability and stability. It is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, along with zero hunger and improved nutrition.
Having low food security means that people have reduced the quality, variety and desirability of their diets due to lack of income or resources. This can lead to malnutrition and may also affect a person’s overall health.
Countries can improve food security by providing immediate hunger relief, reducing inequalities and empowering women. They can also support agribusiness investment projects and promote the role of smallholder farmers in the agriculture sector. In addition, they can invest in research and development to improve agricultural productivity. Finally, they can provide support to community-based organizations that serve as a conduit between donors and local communities. These organizations can help alleviate hunger and poverty among poor households.
Why do we need a food security number?
